Major Layton spoke that one of his roles was to deal with the 'delicate situation' of the UK Italians in Australia as many Italians had sons serving in the British forces in the UK.

Francesco Apicella addressed his situation in a letter to his wife while in Loveday Camp 14D:

To Mrs M Apicella 19 Attneave St, London W.C.1.

19/12/44 - Italian – 22/12/44

Text: (a) Personal to wife

(b) Our son Luigi is in the Special Service branch of the 6th Airborne Division i.e. the parachutists. Good, he is doing his duty for the Fatherland.

However, you will tell him to go again to the Home Office to ask about his father, who is still behind the barbed wire. (NAA:D1901/ A4129)

Francesco arrived in Liverpool, England on the 2nd August 1945 and was released from internment on the 24th August 1945.
