Romolo Chiccioni was the last UK Italian internee to return to the UK.
A café proprietor from Greenock, Scotland he had been arrested on the 10th June 1940.
After a lengthy stay at the 28 Australian Camp Hospital, Waranga from 1943 - 1946, Romolo found himself the last of his group of 200 Italians to be 'interned'.
The letter below written in November 1946, explained why he was overlooked for repatriation but clearly outlined that he didn't want to remain in Australia.
In another letter, Romolo wrote: ‘I wish to point out that I am the only one left of my group who is still interned’.
On 31st July 1947 Chiocconi arrived at Southampton, England on the ‘Asturia’.
