The Arandora Star song

Giovanni Baldelli in Alfio Bernabei's documentary Dangerous Characters spoke about his memories of internment and said, I wrote a song about the Arandora. I was lucky to be among those that managed to survive and was taken back to England by a Canadian destroyer but ten days later we were embarked again and taken to Australia on the Dunera.

Alfio Bernabei reflects: I remember when I tried to convince Baldelli to sing it in Laystall Street, Clerkenwell, in old Little Italy in London. We were filming, the crew were waiting, then he began. (Bernabei, 29.1.25)

Mentre il sole di luglio non risplendeva ancora

Sull’onda molle e muta filava l’Arandora

E trasportava dei poveri italian

Strappati dai lor cari verso un paese lontan

 

Nel sonno e nella veglia ognuno accarezzava

Con malcelato pianto la sua recente piaga

Quando ad un tratto uno scoppio si udì

Così suonò la diana di quel tragico dì

 

Dai ponti e dalle stive il subìto stupor

Accorser tutti quanti con una stretta al cor

Ed alle barche ognuno s’affrettò

E disse il comandante “si salvi ormai chi può”

 

Per l’onde grigie,ostili, videsi galleggiare

Ogni sorta di legno e vasto un naufragare

Di poi la nave dalle caldaie un rombo attraversò

Rizzata sull’istante nel mare sprofondò

A cento e poi a cento periron i fratel nostri

Chi invocando i santi, chi maldicendo ai mostri

E noi per l’acque sempre nel dubbio ancor

La vista dei cadaveri riempivaci di orror.
