While the Dunera Italians had the right to apply, through Major Layton, for permission to return to the United Kingdom, not all applications were successful.
Almost two years since the Italians were arrested and interned, five men received the news that 'should not be returned to the United Kingdom'. It would have been a bitter blow.

Vittorio Bechelli: Fish Restauranteur, Scotland
Riccardo Massarelli: Accountant, England
Arturo Giuseppe Nazzari: Head Waiter, England
Libero Roveto: Restauranteur, England
Giuseppe Zaninetta: Restauranteur, England

At the time of receipt of this news, the Dunera Italians were at Loveday Camp 10. For some men, it was difficult to reconcile that friends and family members who had been interned on the Isle of Man were being released, yet on the other side of the world, they waited for the opportunity to appear before the Italian Advisory Committee to put forward their case.

A case of the tyranny of distance?
