Sabatino Jannetta was born in Belmonte Castello (Frosinone) Italy on the 27th (25th) October 1894. He was a shop owner in Methil, Scotland when he was arrested on the 10th June 1940. He lived with his wife Vincenza at 18 Tower Buildings, Aberhill, Methil.
He worked in the garden party outside of camp, the sanitary work inside camp as well as being part of the kitchen staff. Fortunato Jannetta also in camp was his cousin.
British authorities on the 7th October 1943, refused his release but a report from Tatura Camp on the 14th June 1944 noted: This internee has always behaved himself very well and has endeavoured to assist the Authorities by working on different projects in this camp. It is considered that, if he were released for work of National Importance, he would NOT be a risk to security. (NAA:MP70/1 37/101/185 Tatura Part 4)
On the 6th July 1944, Sabatino was released to Melbourne for employment at Dookie Agricultural College.
Sabatino boarded the Dominion Monarch on the 4th March 1945 in Sydney, NSW. The Dominion Monarch arrived at Liverpool England on the 19th April 1945 and Sabatino had arrived as a ‘released internee’.
The London Gazette of the 13th February 1951, advertised Sabatino’s Certificate of Naturalisation which was awarded 5th December 1950: Jannetta, Sabatino, Italy, 18 Tower Building Aberhill, Methil, Fife Confectioner, Ice Cream Merchant, Fish and Chip Restauranteur.
