Italy Capitulates

On the 8th September 1943, Allied headquartrs in North Africa issued the following announcement by radio:
This is General Eisenhower, Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces. The Italian government has surrundered its armed forces unconditionally. (The Central Queensland Herald)

What would be the implications of this news for the Dunera Italians?

Camp Leader Giovanni Borghi penned the following letter to Mr JA Pietzcker, Consul for Switzerland. After Mussolini's declaration of war and the departure of Italian Consuls and their staff from Australia in June 1940, the Japanese Consulates in Australia represented Italian interests. After Japan's entry into the war in December 1941, the consular representative for Italians changed to the Swiss Legation.
