Michele Coia was released to work with the Civil Aliens Corps on the 16th May 1944. A year later, he was living in Beechworth, Victoria and had received his notification regarding his approval to return to the UK. His letter asked for the relevant forms to be forwarded to him in preparation for his departure from Australia.
He arrived at Liverpool, England on the 23th September 1945 onboard the SS Mauretania together with eight other Dunera Italians.
Michele had departed from Sydney on the 22nd August 1945 which gave him adequate time to buy some necessities. As a matter of course, rail warrants (permission to travel by rail) would have been issued to him to travel to Sydney.
