Pietro Domenico Giuseppe Pillon was born in Monza, Italy on the 19th September 1898. At the time of his arrest at Southampton, England on the 10th June 1940, he worked as the Rubber Cable Production Manager, at Pirelli – General Cable Works, Southampton.
Pietro and his wife Phyllis (née Noyce) lived at 223 Wilton Road, Southampton.
The Hampshire Advertiser and Southampton Times of July 13, 1940 mentioned Pietro and the other UK Italians from Southampton who were survivors of the Arandora Star tragedy.
In Tatura Camp, group leader, Colonel Borghi, also an employee of Pirelli, secured a £50 remittance for Pietro Pillon from Pirelli.
On the 19th January 1942, Pietro was transferred from Loveday Camp 10, South Australia to Tatura Camp, Victoria via Broadmeadows Military Camp. A Home Secretary letter dated 12th January 1942, gave permission for Pietro, Crescenzo Divito and Celeste Servini to return to the UK for consideration of their case.
Pietro departed Tatura Camp on the 17th July 1942 with 16 other UK Italian internees. They embarked the SS Themistocles in Sydney and disembarked in Liverpool, England on the 17th October 1942. The group was re-interned.
Pietro was released from internment on the 28th November 1942 as a Special Case: Category 18: Special cases of extreme hardship, such as where a parent, wife or child was dangerously ill. (White Paper, Civilian Internees of Enemy Nationality, Home Office)
