Ostilio Notarianni was born in Vallerotonda (Frosinone) Italy on the 19th August 1901.  At the time of his arrest on the 10th June 1940, he was living at 3 Bayford Road, Littlehampton, England with his wife Argia and three children.

On the 1939 Register, Ostilio noted his occupation as caterer master and Agria’s occupation was caterer.  His Australia record noted his occupation as café proprietor and his Civil Aliens Corps record noted his occupation as hairdresser.

On the 16th May 1944, Ostilio was ‘released on parole’ for work with the Civil Aliens Corps in forestry.  After two months, Ostilio was dissatisfied with his placement as he suffered minor ailments such as stiffness in his right elbow, breathlessness and swelling of his right arm. Due to these ailments, he had to take time off work for recovery and found himself in a unfinancial situation plus he experienced difficulty in getting paid sick leave which was due to him.

With an invalid wife and three dependent children, he asked for a transfer to employment as a hairdresser. Additionally, he preferred not to work in a field such as timber felling which would take away from his hands the agility required for his profession as a hairdresser. After several consultations with various doctors and medication he was diagnosed with neuritis of this right arm and forearm.  On the 30th January 1945, his job with the Civil Aliens Corps was deferred while he awaited repatriation.

He embarked the SS Athlone Castle in Sydney, New South Wales on the 6th February 1945.  He arrived in Liverpool, England on the 29th March 1945 as a ‘released internee’.  The notation on the ship’s register was that his place of residence was 269 Parliamentary Road, Glasgow and that his occupation was a hairdresser.
