Angelo (Celeste) Greco was born in Arpino (Frosinone) Italy on the 9th June 1885. He was a caterer from Swansea, Wales and was arrested on the 10th June 1940. His listed as occupation was café proprietor and ice cream manufacturer.
Together with Giuseppe Pelosi, Angelo survived the sinking of the Arandora Star with the help of a stub of a candle. Angelo (55) and Giuseppe (57) both from Swansea, Wales were in a cabin when the torpedo hit. In the darkness, Giuseppe remembered a candle in his pocket. In Bury Camp, the young Londoners in the group stayed up late at night chatting by candlelight, much to the chagrin of the older men. Giuseppe took things into his own hands and confiscated the candle. Angelo and Giuseppe were forever grateful to the young men because without the candle, they would have found it extremely difficult to make their way through the darkness and get themselves on deck.
On the 24th October 1942 Angelo was released from Tatura Camp 2A, Victoria for transfer to the UK. He was one of six UK Italian internees who boarded the SS Desirade and was transshipped to the SS Johan Van Oldenbarnvelt which arrived in Liverpool, England on the 15th January 1943.
Angelo was re-interned on the Isle of Man. On the 3rd April 1943, he was released as per Category 15 of the White Paper: 15. Persons who had a British-born or naturalised son serving in the British Navy, Army or Air Force (White Paper, Civilian Internees of Enemy Nationality, Home Office)
